Background of the Study
Social media has increasingly become a vital tool for disaster awareness and response, especially in urban areas like Port Harcourt City Local Government, Rivers State. Digital platforms facilitate the rapid dissemination of critical information during emergencies, enabling real-time communication between authorities and the public (Okoro, 2023). The immediacy and widespread reach of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have transformed traditional emergency response strategies, allowing communities to prepare for and react to disasters effectively. Recent studies indicate that social media can serve as a primary channel for early warnings and post-disaster support, thereby enhancing community resilience (Ekwu, 2024). However, challenges remain regarding misinformation, coordination, and the reliability of online sources. The role of social media in disaster management continues to evolve as technological advances and user behaviors change, making it essential to assess its effectiveness in improving disaster preparedness and response in Port Harcourt (Oguejiofor, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its potential, the role of social media in disaster awareness and response in Port Harcourt is not fully understood. There are concerns regarding the spread of misinformation, lack of coordination among responders, and variable access to digital platforms during emergencies. These issues undermine the effectiveness of social media as a disaster management tool. Understanding these challenges is crucial for optimizing digital communication strategies in disaster contexts (Uzo, 2024).

- To identify challenges associated with the use of digital platforms during emergencies.
- To propose recommendations for improving online disaster communication strategies.
Research Questions:
- How effective is social media in enhancing disaster awareness in Port Harcourt?

Research Hypotheses:
- H₁: Social media usage significantly improves disaster awareness in Port Harcourt.
- H₂: Misinformation negatively affects the efficacy of social media in disaster response.
- H₃: Improved coordination among digital platforms is positively associated with effective disaster management.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into harnessing social media for effective disaster management, which is critical for community resilience in Port Harcourt. The findings may guide emergency planners and policymakers in refining digital communication strategies during crises (Amadi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the role of social media in disaster awareness and response in Port Harcourt City Local Government, Rivers State, excluding traditional communication channels.
